Each
year several online poker sites, brick and mortar casinos and small groups of friends hold satellite tournaments that send players to the main event of
the World Series of Poker.
A satellite tournament is where many players put up a smaller amount of money to play in a preliminary event where the prize is an entry
into a larger event. For example, 1000 players might all put up $10, with the winner then being able to play in a $10,000 buy-in event.
For the past few years, by far the largest number of WSOP satellites have taken place at the PokerStars online cardroom.
PokerStars is the largest poker site in the world, has
the most satellites available and sends the most players to the World series of Poker main event -- about 1/3 of the Championship event players will
be winners of PokerStars Satellites. They also offer satellites for other major tournaments like the Latin America Poker Tour and European Poker Tour.
